How to Write a Strong Thesis Statement for IELTS Writing Task 2
The paraphrase looks fine. Then sentence two says This essay will discuss both sides — and the rest of the paper never quite picks a lean. When we mark, Task Response often stays soft for that reason alone: the introduction never told the examiner what you think, or which two jobs the bodies will do.
Here you just need a thesis that matches the stem, is specific enough to steer Body 1 and Body 2, and stays the same through the conclusion. That one sentence is not decoration. It is the map.

What a thesis statement is
Task 2 is not one fixed format. Most papers fall into five groups teachers keep using: opinion, discussion, advantages/disadvantages, problem–solution, and two-part. The thesis still has the same job across types: answer the stem in one clear line after you paraphrase.
A short introduction usually does two things:
- Paraphrase the question (sentence 1)
- Thesis — your stance or roadmap (sentence 2)
A useful thesis answers the task directly, previews your main line of argument, and stays consistent with the conclusion. It does not repeat the paraphrase, list every body detail, or hide behind This essay will discuss….

Thesis examples by essay type
These are working patterns, not formulas to paste cold. Change the reasons to fit your prompt.
Opinion (agree / disagree) — Advertising aimed at children should be banned.
I largely agree that such advertising should be restricted because it exploits limited critical judgement and encourages unhealthy consumption.
Discussion (both views + opinion) — Some prefer exams; others prefer continuous assessment.
While formal exams can measure performance under pressure, I believe continuous assessment provides a fairer picture of learning and should carry more weight.
Advantages / disadvantages — Studying abroad — do advantages outweigh disadvantages?
Although overseas study involves high costs and cultural adjustment, the long-term academic and career benefits generally outweigh these drawbacks.
Problem / solution — Why do young people leave school early, and how can this be addressed?
Early school leaving is driven mainly by financial pressure and weak academic support; targeted scholarships and mentoring programmes can reduce dropout rates.
Two-part question — Why is lifelong learning important? How can governments encourage it?
Lifelong learning matters because labour markets change rapidly; governments can encourage it through subsidised adult education and flexible work–study policies.

Weak thesis vs strong thesis
Empty roadmap. I will discuss both sides or There are many advantages and disadvantages tells the examiner nothing. Stronger: I support X because A and B, or The advantages outweigh the disadvantages for reason A.
Topic lecture, not this prompt. Education is very important in modern society could sit on almost any education paper. Stronger: Free university tuition would widen access but require higher taxation — that answers a real stem.
“It depends” with no line. Vague In my opinion, it depends leaves Task Response fuzzy. If you partly agree, name the limit: It depends on income level… therefore I partly agree.
I notice students get stuck when the thesis sounds academic but never answers the question words — to what extent, both views, solutions. One timed draft on advertising never said agree or disagree; sentence two only promised a discussion. After the intro forced I largely agree… because…, Body 1 and Body 2 stopped wandering and TR looked finished.
Band 7 pattern: you can roughly predict the body topics from the thesis alone. Criteria context: band descriptors explained.
Thesis as the introduction’s second sentence
A clean two-sentence intro keeps paraphrase and stance separate:
- S1: Marketing campaigns directed at young consumers are widely criticised, and some argue they should be prohibited.
- S2 (thesis): I largely support tighter restrictions because children cannot evaluate commercial claims critically.
Sentence 1 restates the issue. Sentence 2 carries Task Response. Do not dump your full argument into the paraphrase — save the lean for the thesis. More openings by type: introduction examples.
After the thesis, body paragraphs need clear links, not a new stance mid-essay: linking words for Task 2.
Quick thesis checklist
Before you leave the introduction, ask bluntly:
- Does it match the essay type?
- Can you underline a clear position or plan?
- Will Body 1 and Body 2 follow naturally from it?
- Does the conclusion keep the same stance?
- Did you avoid empty openers (This essay will analyse…)?

Questions students ask
Must the thesis always be the second sentence?
Almost always in a short IELTS intro. A third sentence is rarely needed and can waste words. From the scripts I mark, long openings often bury the lean so the examiner has to hunt for it.
Can I write a thesis without “I”?
Yes — This essay argues that… or a direct claim without I is fine, as long as the position is clear. Clarity matters more than avoiding personal language.
Is a one-sided thesis OK for “discuss both views”?
You must still cover both views in the body. Your thesis can favour one side after acknowledging both — that is the usual Band 7 pattern for discussion + opinion.
Does a strong thesis guarantee Band 7 Task Response?
No. You still need to develop and support ideas. The thesis only sets a clear direction; thin bodies will still drag TR down.
After you check your score
Most free tools stop at another band estimate. EssayGradeWise adds criterion drills inside a 20-practice personalized plan (TR, CC, LR, GRA) so you practise the weak spot — not another full essay at random. If your checker TR is soft because sentence two never took a lean, the next sitting should force a thesis that Body 1 and Body 2 can actually follow.
