IELTS Writing Task 2 Word Count: How Many Words for Band 7?
Word count is not its own IELTS criterion — but length still decides a lot of what examiners can see. The official Task 2 minimum is at least 250 words. In the scripts we mark, Band 7 answers usually land around 280–320: enough for two developed body paragraphs without padding. Far under 250 risks a penalty and thin Task Response. Pushing past 400 in forty minutes rarely helps; coherence and accuracy often slip first.

Official word count rules
The prompt says at least 250 words for Task 2 — not exactly 250. Examiners or the marking system count; you will not get a live counter in the exam. Task 1 has its own 150-word minimum and is marked separately. Under-length Task 2 scripts may be penalised at examiner discretion, especially when the essay also looks underdeveloped.
Ideal length for Band 7
A workable split on paper:
- Introduction: about 40–60 words
- Body 1 / Body 2: about 90–100 each
- Conclusion: about 40–50
- Total: roughly 280–320
Why not stop at 250? Band 7 Task Response asks for extended and supported main ideas. Two thin bodies that hit the minimum on the clock often still feel unfinished — one claim, one vague example, then a rush to the end.
What happens if you write too little
Under 250 — or an essay that looks short even if the count is close — Task Response usually drops first because ideas lack support. Examiners may also apply a length penalty. Scripts under about 200 words often drag several criteria down at once.
Band 6 sign we see often: body paragraphs under ~70 words and a one-sentence conclusion that restates the intro without adding control.
One student kept finishing timed drafts at 230–240, proud of “almost enough.” TR stayed soft because each body was two thin lines. We did not ask for flashy vocabulary. We forced one concrete example and one consequence sentence into each body. The next draft crossed 280 without filler, and TR moved before the word-count anxiety did.
What happens if you write too much
400+ words in 40 minutes usually means less editing time and more grammar slips. Repetition to fill space hurts Lexical Resource and Coherence. A third body that is only half-developed often looks bolted on.
Quality beats quantity. A tight 290-word essay with two clear bodies routinely outscores a repetitive 380-word draft that never finishes a thought.
How to hit 280 words without padding
Build each body with development, not filler:
- Topic sentence — main idea (1 sentence)
- Explanation — why it matters (about 2 sentences)
- Example — a specific case, setting, or consequence (1–2 sentences)
- Link — tie back to the question (1 sentence)
That shape is roughly 90 words per body — and 280+ arrives without In today’s modern society or restating the thesis three times.

Questions students ask
Do headings and bullet points count?
Task 2 is an essay. Use paragraphs. Bullet lists do not replace developed prose, and examiners are not marking a slide deck.
Can I count words during the exam?
You will not have a word counter. From the scripts I mark, students who hit 280 calmly in practice stop mid-sentence counting on test day. Train until a full answer feels long enough on lined paper.
Does Task 1 word count affect Task 2?
They are marked separately. Still protect about 40 minutes for Task 2 — rushing Task 2 to polish Task 1 is a common length leak.
