IELTS Writing Task 2 Advantages & Disadvantages Essay Guide (2026)
Advantages/disadvantages looks like one essay type until you mark a stack of them. Some prompts only ask you to list both sides. Others ask whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages — and that second stem wants a clear verdict. A lot of Band 6 scripts use one template for both. They write a neat balanced list when the question asked for a judgment, or they force I agree onto a pure analysis prompt. Task Response is already thin before the language gets judged.
What you need is plainer than a template book suggests: read the exact stem, decide whether a position is required, then build two bodies that actually grow. Aim for roughly 280–320 words.

Two prompt types
Task 2 is not one fixed format. Most papers fall into five groups teachers keep using: opinion, discussion, advantages/disadvantages, problem–solution, and two-part. If you are new here, start with the map: IELTS Writing Task 2 essay types.
Within advantages/disadvantages, the stem still changes the job:

I notice students get stuck when they treat every pros/cons prompt as “write some good points and some bad points.” One timed draft on Do the advantages of remote work outweigh the disadvantages? never said which side won — so TR stayed soft even with tidy Furthermore scaffolding. After the introduction forced advantages outweigh because…, Body 2 still covered the risks, then pushed back. The lean finally matched the stem.
A workable structure
List-both sample: More people are working from home. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

Four paragraphs is enough for both stems — the intro and conclusion change more than the body count:

You do not need a rigid Topic sentence → Explain → Example → Link chant in every paragraph. You do need a clear lead sentence, detail that answers why, and enough specifics that the idea is not floating in slogan English.

Thesis lines that match the stem
For outweigh prompts, put the verdict where it is hard to miss — usually the last sentence of the introduction.
- Advantages outweigh: Although remote work can blur work–life boundaries, I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because it raises productivity and widens access to jobs.
- Disadvantages outweigh: While flexibility is appealing, I argue that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, mainly due to isolation and weaker team coordination.
For a pure list-both prompt, you do not need a winner. A map is enough: This essay examines the main benefits and drawbacks of working from home.
Avoid: There are both advantages and disadvantages with no map — and for outweigh questions, no verdict at all. It depends without saying on what also fails here.
How the body should grow
Same remote-work topic. A Body 1 that earns marks usually stays with one clear advantage and grows it:
One clear advantage is that employees save commuting time and can schedule deep-focus work around personal responsibilities. Reduced travel also cuts costs and stress for people who live far from city centres. For instance, a parent who previously spent two hours a day on public transport can use that time for focused tasks or family care, which often improves overall job satisfaction.
For an outweigh essay, Body 2 still treats the other side honestly — then judges it:
On the other hand, remote work can weaken informal mentoring and make collaboration slower when teams rely only on messages. Junior staff may miss spontaneous feedback that happens in an office. Nevertheless, these drawbacks do not outweigh the gains if companies schedule regular video check-ins and occasional in-person meetings, because the productivity and access benefits remain larger for most roles.
For a list-both prompt, end Body 2 without crowning a winner. Save a neutral summary for the conclusion. Keep both sides roughly equal in length — a long praise paragraph and a courtesy line of risk looks like you only answered half the question.

Mistakes we see in drafts
One structure for both stems. Students paste the same balanced outline onto outweigh questions and never declare a winner. Fix: underline outweigh / give your opinion before you plan.
Five thin points instead of two grown ones. A list of bullets scores worse than one advantage with a real mechanism and example. Develop 1–2 ideas per side.
Uneven development. Advantages get 120 words; disadvantages get two sentences. On list-both prompts, that imbalance is easy to spot. On outweigh prompts you may spend more space on the stronger side — but the weaker side still needs a real paragraph, not a shrug.
Outweigh essay with no clear verdict. Intro maps “pros and cons,” conclusion says “both are important.” That answers a different question. State which side is stronger early and keep it.

Questions students ask
Do I need a personal opinion in every advantages/disadvantages essay?
Only when the stem asks you to outweigh, decide, or give your opinion. Pure what are the advantages and disadvantages? questions reward balanced analysis without a forced verdict. From the scripts I mark, bolted-on In my opinion on a list-both prompt often looks like the writer copied the wrong template.
How many advantages and disadvantages should I write?
One well-developed idea per body paragraph is safer than three undeveloped bullets. Two short points per side can work if each is explained — not just named.
Is this the same as a discussion essay?
No. Discussion essays present people’s views; advantages/disadvantages essays evaluate pros and cons of a situation or policy. I notice students who mix the two often open with Some people think working from home is good when the prompt never mentioned two camps. Use the discussion guide only when the stem is actually both-views.
Academic vs GT — same approach?
Yes. Same Task 2 marking criteria and the same stem logic for both modules. The topic may feel more everyday on GT; the paragraph jobs do not change.
